end of the pier

we sat at the end of the pier
and dangled our legs …
though – they did not reach the water

mother and daughter
(thirty years) …

I had brought a picnic lunch:
OUR salad (as it had become)
of couscous and lemon and parsley
and garbanzo beans
which we scarfed down, hungrily,
with buns and ginger ale

she, briefly,
lolled her head on my shoulder
and patted my hand
as she whispered the word:
Mommy

the tide was coming in
and the two of us scooched backwards

(that - didn't slow it down  for a second)

  1. Wendy, hi! So great to see you! This is a lovely capture with a soothing feel to it, and that salad sounds scrumptious! Very nice :-)
