Garden Trilogy - 1. Chinese Garden

The garden
rose from the concrete
to plop curiously
amid the shops of Chinatown:
a Ming Dynasty courtyard -
magic and mystical -
resurrected in a faraway place.

The peace and serenity
compelled me to sit and breath in
the shushing breezes that gently lapped
as the leafy sprites danced, smiling,
about the gentle curves of roofs and arches -
where I feel protected
from evil spirits.

There is grace
in the knowledge
that people built
and care for such a haven
in the midst
of the city's frantic cold struggle
to keep moving

or be left behind.
note:  The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, in the midst of Vancouver's bustling Chinatown is the first ever Chinese garden built outside of China and is a model of a Ming Dynasty scholar's home.  In 2011, the Garden was named one of the "Top Ten City Gardens in the World" by National Geographic in their publication "Secret Journeys of a Lifetime".
