Star of the Show

It was as though she played
to Invisible People
who had taken up residence
in her head

and, thus, she saw life –
not as it was –
but, instead:
as what she wanted it to be

in her role as:
Star of the Show -

cheered and applauded
on to one ice blue stage
after the other,

by the Invisible Steering Committee
who stoked her blazing delusions

and then sent her spiraling
out of control - to flop -
against a reality-check backdrop.

And so . . . in frosted bare branches
amongst the boughs,

she grew bitter cold –
with self-pity and disappointment,
as the years passed by . . .

confounding her in frigid mysteries of:  Why?
