breathless in the autumn air

we came suddenly upon
the stand of trees

and caught the gold and umber
dry leaves, chattering, rather gaily,
amongst themselves

a rustle of party silk
swishing in spirited flutters
against green billows

lively and kinetic
and then, it was as if

our brusque intrusion crashed
the feathered bright occasion and
abruptly, as winged birds take flight,

a profound primordial stillness,
was conferred, gracefully,
upon the place –

breathless, in that moment
