Bali Ha'i backyard

HEAD DOODLING BACK

it was beautiful
in my old backyard

I remember the breeze
through the flowers
and the trees

it tumbles, still, in
ethereal cascades
of wonderful memories:

those long ago sunshine days
of apple juice and biscuits,
running shoe sand
and monkey bars

and the garden hose
that arced and poured
on everything under
the backyard sky

like the waterfall scene
on Bali Ha'i

notes:  "Bali Ha'i" is an exotic paradise from the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific (and subsequent 1958 film) that captures in pictures and song a sense of tranquility and beauty.

In the lead up to Mother's Day this weekend, a little verse, from a few years back, in which I tried to capture the bliss of hours spent in the back yard with my children, when they were little.  It was - and continues to be - a privilege to be the mother of Matthew, Brynn, Patrick and Michael - and now a Grandmother, to boot.  Having children in your life is a gift.  Smiles.

  2. Yes, having children (and grandchildren) in one's life is certainly a gift. I like your reminiscences here, Wendy. May those sunshine days stay in one's mind forever! And on, the simple joys of the garden hose!

  5. The South Seas feel will always linger on in memory. Just swaying palm fronds were enough to send one back through the years!
