we gather round the campfire

our family gathers
round the campfire:
hypnotic flames that swirl
and curl and cast
a golden glow
upon the visages
of all who've come together
to celebrate our present
and our past
in this hard world ... a resting place:
safe harbor reached at last

we gather
in lake twilight
and in the gentle shush
of hushing waves,
laughter fades to breathy sighs
leafy branch on breezes sway:
whiffle wind's soft fluttering
as troubles float away ...
in woodland and in water notes
like yellow nuphar petals
sailing off on lily pad boats

our voices
mingle with lake song,
and to the spirits present there,
we tell our stories –
each tale reminding us
what we are part of
and the love that we all share …
we will add, yet to our number
and the years will take away
but time will only strengthen
the family gathered here today

  5. Yes, "time will only strengthen the family gathered here today." I understand these feelings well, Wendy. It is wonderful when family gets together, and one can't help but think of those who are no longer there....but one knows the family will go on, and that campfire (literally or figuratively) will continue to glow bright!

  7. Perfect! Here's my favorite part:
"in this hard world ... a resting place:
    safe harbor reached at last"
That family and its stories could always feel this way! And that the safe harbor be there amazing setting or not.

  15. How nice to be with the loved ones on a day to be spent together. Family gathering is a privilege that many can only wish for but cannot for some reasons!
