end of August

the end of August is summer
finely tuned – gone are the showers
of spring and dog days of July

the end of August makes me want
to read and buy new shoes and
check out flower patches … humming

and go to country fairs and cook up end
of August things … like vats of harvest soups
and zucchini loaves and apple rhubarb crisps

the summer lakes, I have watercolored
in dreamy pastel waves, begin to ebb away –
I will miss their scent and sound

and yet … for all the endings
I have come to and will come to …
none are quite so sweet as August’s end

note:  I am just back from a lovely – albeit jam-packed – overnighter to Victoria visiting my daughter who is on a short special assignment at the BC Legislature … so proud of that wonderful woman.  I took a ton of pictures – of that beautiful city and of the fabulous Butchart Gardens – a few of which, I’ll try to share over the next few weeks.

  4. Ah, the end of August is always a sad time for me - it means that summer is fading fast. But there are delights as well - such as buying new shoes (reminiscent of those back-to-school days) and delicious foods made with summer produce. Smiles!

  5. End of August is so very special. For me it's both an end of summer and a new beginning. It's coming back to school or getting started at work again after vacations. Love the preparations too of winter that will come.

  9. There is such a palpable sense of longing in your words here, Wendy! Especially love; "the summer lakes, I have water colored in dreamy pastel waves, begin to ebb away – I will miss their scent and sound." Beautifully penned.

  10. I am sure all of your Augusts are included in this poem Wendy as we all have that expectation that each month comes like a friend every year to play with us like an school chum.

  12. And so the wheel turns us towards a new season......
the summer lakes, I have watercolored
in dreamy pastel waves, begin to ebb away –
I will miss their scent and sound........ I especially enjoyed this stanza.

  15. End of August is the beginning of my favorite time of year in my world ... when the trees present glorious shades of gold, russet, crimson, and evergreen, when there's the smell of wood smoke in the air and the crunch of leaves underfoot, and overhead honking V's of geese heading south for the winter!

  16. The end of august is a sweet time. I've been canning and freezing veggies for the winter ahead. It all seems to come at the end of august. And that means that soon my favorite fall will be here and then winter and snow. Our leaves will not be changing color until the first of October or so when the first frost hits. The trees will hang on to their green. I find the end of August to be sad because that is when I put away the hummingbird feeders and encourage them to fly even more south. A lovely poem this is. it makes me long for the beginning of fall.

    1. Sure, I'll send along 3 or 4 for use in the Pantry - or not. Beautiful British Columbia does get a good deal of limelight at the Pantry but, they don't call it Beautiful BC, for nothing ~ smiles ~
