I came upon a mitten
lying lost, in a hodgepodge
of elfin footprints
on the powdered sugar path
and on impulse, inhaled
the smell of wool and ice
that floated like a spell
in the vapors of my breath:
warm familiarity, as lovely
as a tattered storybook –
the moment suspended
. . . beautiful . . .
in purity
and white
and I
remembered, then:
snow
angels and thought
of her . . .
of her . . .
taking
off her mitten
and drawing
halos
with her
finger
~ in loving memory ~
note: A snow angel is the silhouette of an angel made, in fresh snow, by lying on your back and moving your arms and legs up and down, to form the shape of an angel.

They remind of good and happy days.
ReplyDeleteThe narrative from the found mitten back to memories of snow-angels and the passed is so lovely.. especially the inclusion of the smell of wool and snow touched memories inside myself as well.. Such lovely times... sigh!.
ReplyDeleteIt could happen, smiles ~ I love the idea of snow angels taking off their mittens ~
ReplyDeleteWishing you Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year Wendy ~ All the best ~
Some things do trigger memories, I think. And they seem so real for that moment....until we remember. And, yes, there is sadness in thinking of those who are no longer with us at this time of year.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you, Wendy! I have enjoyed experiencing your poetic year.
Enchanting, delightful and heartfelt, Wendy. Lovely photo as well. I wish we had snow for making snow angels right now. Merry Christmas, friend.
ReplyDeleteSnow angels can be most intriguing! Lying in the cold and swishing about should be an enjoyable time for the young. You've given a most perfect picture of what it had been.. Wishing you happy holidays and Merry Christmas, Wendy!.

ReplyDeleteVery charming, and wonderful photo as well. Yes, a little bittersweet too, as we think of long-ago years of innocence.
ReplyDeleteAw. So poignant. I hope you'll have a better year this 2015.
