The Spell

I think, when they were apart,
their lives were somewhat
colorless and drab.

But together - they had
a kind of magic:

like music box dancers
opened up into the light

spinning
around and around
holding tight
in rapt absorption

enthralled by the marvel
of being bathed
in radiance -

under an enchanting chandelier.

Looking up into the light
that ignited their wild swirling joy:

a beautiful vertigo

that never seemed
to go anywhere -
but to dizzy.

Time passed:
and when, at last,
their passion petered down

to a place where
ordinary life encroached
upon their magic space -

the spell was broken
and the flame soon died.

They weren't meant to be
ordinary - together -
I guess.

And so they parted.

Though, she once confessed to me:

It was the best time of her life.

note:  The chandelier pictured is in the Marine Building in Vancouver.  The Marine Building is, for many Vancouverites,  the building most clearly identified with Vancouver.  It is spectacularly adorned with many marine and Western Canada symbols in a variety of materials and (built in 1929) is considered to be one of the great art deco buildings in the world.

  1. Oh those beautiful chandeliers can cast a romantic spell! Too bad some fairy tales aren't made to last!
