Together and Apart

At intervals
he looked up from his book
and drifted far away –
for a bit –

his free hand
holding up his head.

If he was a picture,
the caption would have read:
the thinker . . .
thinks again . . .
thinks some more . . .

until –
book-ended by his thoughts –
he set the text aside

and we sat, in muffled notes
of my half-hums against the silence –
lost, pleasantly, in the clouds –
waiting.

He straightened, then,
and gave my knee a pat.

That was the sign –
he was back.

  1. I can see this moment perfectly. I half expected him to doze off! I really enjoyed the easy, head-in-the-clouds feeling of this...felt like I could float away myself...as I have a tendency to do.

  2. Thanks, Jennifer. You capture moments with fantastic poetry, I have to say.
