West Coast January Weather

Finally the rain-snow-sleet has stopped –
though, I remain in recovery, still,
from a particularly, virulent bout
of epically belligerent

West Coast January weather.

It began benignly enough, in irksome
stop-starts of blubbering sniffles
 – sadly, a fairly chronic condition  –
at this time of the year

but, by day three, it appeared
to be in the throes of some sort of
convulsive demonic possession

raining down upon the earth,
a blast of meteorological phenomena:
so multifarious and alien in the sheer
conglomeration of forms, that precipitation,
can materialize in:  that
humankind has yet to coin the noun
befitting such a histrionic deluge.

But, at last, it has stopped

leaving myself, and the rest of
the doused population of the land
to fill our lungs, jubilantly,
with gentle lachrymose air, infused with
the distinctive aroma of moldy cheese . . .
on a wet dog.

note:  the prompt at Poetry Jam this week is "Tis the Season".

  1. There was some elegance to the blizzard that you've depicted until the ending where I nearly puked thinking about that smell.. yuck.

  2. Ha, I guess I would prefer winter snow over winter rain....It would really be difficult to deal with a few days of rain in succession. Hard to go OUT knowing one will be cold and drenched. Ah yes, and I can just picture all smelling like moldy cheese....on a wet dog. Eewwww!

  3. I am not much of a fan of 'rain-snow-sleet'. It is cold and does not result in a pretty landscape. Your poem is powerfully evocative and makes me want to curl up in front of a warm fire.

  5. This reminds me of the years we lived in the Netherlands--rain, snow, sleet. I remember wishing it would just snow and stay snowy. The constant cold wet got really dreary. First I thought you were going to talk about having the nasty cold that seems to be going around even here in mild Southern California.

  7. What wonderful descriptions! You had me seeing, feeling and smelling (*gag!*) all of it. Our winter has been very mild, especially of late. I feel for you!

BTW the comment you left me on my Bumblebee poem cracked me up! That would definitely be a site I'd never forget! Haha!

  8. That ending made me smile, that's horribly yucky ~ Winter is harder on us here and storm is upon us this week ~ Oh well, life goes on ~ And I hope you are feeling better ~

  9. That smell that I usually would say was the smell of wet sheep is repulsive, I think it's the same as a flu.. we have such weather right now..
